Abstract

Menopause describes the cessation of a woman’s menstrual period due to the ovaries’ shutdown of estrogen and progesterone production. Decreased levels of these hormones cause menopause symptoms and reduce the quality of life. Therefore, this study aims to determine how the quality of life of postmenopausal women and the practice of periodontics in Medan City are related to the condition of teeth. A descriptive method was used with a cross-sectional design to adapt the questionnaires. The number of samples was 60 people based on medical record data at the periodontics installation of the RSGM USU and dentists’ practice in Medan. Furthermore, a Likert scale was used to assess the quality of life of postmenopausal women with periodontitis. The results showed that the quality of life, which strongly influenced the teeth, was Stage IV Grade B. In terms of social relations, the most decisive influence on the condition of the teeth was appearance. The aspect of the physical ability which strongly influences the condition is chewing hard food. In conclusion, menopausal women with periodontitis influence their quality of life from aspects of physical ability, social relations, general health, and psychology. Abstract

The demineralization of tooth enamel, which can be triggered by acidic foods and drinks at pH < 5.5, can initiate dental caries. Yogurt and probiotic supplements are drinks that are often consumed to help digestive function and improve the immune system. However, both drinks have a low pH, thereby, a long time of consumption can trigger the demineralization process. This study aims to evaluate the enamel hardness after applying yogurt and probiotic supplements, which was carried out experimentally in a laboratory with a one-group post-test design. The sample used is 9 human maxillary premolars in each treatment group. The treatment group comprises the test material, such as yogurt and probiotic supplements, as well as one control group with artificial saliva. Dental samples were immersed in the test material for 96 hours, and the enamel hardness level was measured with a Micro Vickers Hardness tester. The T-paired test showed that soaking with yogurt does not significantly affect the hardness of the enamel, as indicated by a p-value of 0.016. However, the effect was significant in probiotic supplements, with p=0.004. The results showed that soaking with yogurt was not significantly different from probiotic supplements in reducing enamel hardness, as evidenced by the Post Hoc (LSD) test (p=0.464). Conclusively, yogurt decreased enamel hardness less than probiotic supplements.

Abstract

Currently, there is an increase in the demand for aesthetics, which includes the need for a beautiful appearance. Gingival hyperpigmentation is an extremely disturbing aesthetic problem caused by melanin deposition of melanocytes in the basal and suprabasal layers of the epithelium. The color of the pigment can range from pale to dark brown or black, depending on the amount and distribution in the tissue. Gingival depigmentation therapy is a periodontal plastic surgery method that can provide patients with good outcomes. A 21-year-old female complained of having brown front gums and an unsettling appearance. The patient does not smoke, has allergies to drugs and food, or suffers from systemic disease. The depigmentation process was conducted using number15 scalpels, and the gingival contour was created before irrigation utilizing Kirkland. Furthermore, a periodontal pack was used to cover the surgical site, and there were no complaints during the postoperative follow-up visit.

Abstract

Heat-cured acrylic resin is easily fractured and can be prevented by adding reinforcing materials of duck eggshell powder. Furthermore, it can be used as a biocompatible reinforcing material due to the high content of CaCO3. This study aims to determine the effect of adding 2.5% and 5% duck eggshells as reinforcement for the denture base with heat-cured acrylic resin on the transverse strength. The method is an  laboratory experiments with a post-test only control design conducted on January 2022. The samples were made by adding a reinforcing agent of 2.5% and 5% heat-cured acrylic resin powder’s weight in a mould sized 65 x 10 x 2.5 ± 0.5 mm with 11 samples in each group. The curing process was executed at a temperature of 70°C for 90 minutes before increasing to 100°C for 30 minutes, and the transverse strength of acrylic resin was measured using the Universal Testing Machine. The sample tested using univariate analysis with the results of the average transverse strength in the control group 66.59 ± 1.88 MPa, after adding 2.5% duck eggshell 72.61 ± 3.05 MPa and 5% duck eggshell 86.14 ± 4.09. The one-way ANOVA and LSD tests showed significant results with p-value = 0.001 (p < 0.05) and 0.001 (p <0.05). The highest transverse strength value of heat-cured acrylic resin was found in the 5% duck eggshell group, followed by 2.5%, and lastly, the control group.

Abstract

Primary teeth play a role in mastication, speech function, appearance, and as a provider of space for children's permanent teeth. Mothers need to know the functions of their children's primary teeth so they are willing to take care of their children's teeth. This study aims to see the relationship of a mother’s knowledge regarding the functions of children’s primary teeth to the number of children and the level of education in Salapian District, Langkat. This study is an analytical study with a cross-sectional design. The research subjects were 100 people; 30 prospective mothers, 30 mothers with one child, and 40 mothers with more than one child. Data were collected using the interview technique and the analytical test used was the Kruskal Wallis test with a significance value of p<0.05. The results showed that 15 respondents (15%) had a good level of mother’s knowledge regarding the functions of children’s primary teeth, 36 respondents (36%) were in an insufficient category, and 49 respondents (49%) were in less category. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between the mother’s knowledge regarding children’s primary teeth functions the number of children and education level (p=0.001 and p=0.001). This study concluded that mothers who have many children have a better knowledge about functions of primary teeth than mothers with few children. Mothers with higher education levels have a better level of knowledge than mothers with primarysecondary education. Abstract

There have been numerous researches showing that articulation disorders and malocclusion are linked. The most prevalent malocclusion in speech or articulation disorders is anterior open bite (AOB). Excessive propulsion of the tongue forward when articulating phonemes causes altered articulation in patients with open bites, as the tongue is in a more forward posture. The presence of this speech disorder can have a negative impact on a person's quality of life, although there hasn't been much research done on the impacts of AOB in cases of speech disorders in children. This study was to look at the link between speech disorders and the occurrence of anterior open bites (AOB) in a comprehensive way. Search results of research on four databases, namely ScienDirect, PubMed, Spingerlink, and Google Scholar, are displayed. The keywords used include speech disorder, articulation disorder, open bite, anterior open bite.  Five articles were selected using case control and cross-sectional methods in their research. The sample with AOB in this study was analyzed to determine the presence of speech disorders. The five articles gave similar results, showing that patients with malocclusion, especially AOB, had a tendency to have speech disorders. Articulation disorders in the phoneme /s/z/d/l/t/ become the dominant problem experienced by patients with AOB. Anterior open bite (AOB) is a form of malocclusion that causes more articulation disorders than other malocclusions. The presence and position of the tongue are thought to have a substantial influence on articulation disorders.

Abstract

Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is the most frequent oral cancer. The management for OSCC are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy have high toxicity and side effects, therefore effort are needed to reduce them. Several studies show that herbal medicines have anticancer effects with lower toxicity and side effects. The objective is to discuss about management of OSCC using chemotherapy and anticancer herbal medicines as adjunctive therapy.  A 59-year-old man came to the oral medicine clinic complaining a painful ulcer on the right tongue since 8 months ago. The ulcer had been enlarged in the last 3 months and the tongue was difficult to be moved. He used pain relievers and aloe vera gel but there was no improvement. He smoked one pack a day since 40 years ago. Intraoral showed an irregular indurated endophytic mass with an ulcer on the right lateral of the tongue. An incisional biopsy was performed and the histopathological diagnosis was poorly differentiated OSCC. The patient was referred to the oncology department and advised for chemotherapy 6 cycles per 3 weeks. He also used herbal medicines containing Panax ginseng radix, Panax pseudoginseng radix, Ophiopogonis japonicus, Ganoderma lucidum, Ligusticum wallichii rhizoma, and Atractylodes macrocephala rhizoma. The content of these herbal medicines have anticancer and immunomodulatory effects. After the second cycle of chemotherapy, there was a significant improvement. OSCC management with chemotherapy combined with anticancer herbal medicines can increase the success of therapy and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy.
